GENERAL ASSEMBLY ACTIVITIES
House Ways and Means Committee
Late yesterday afternoon, the committee heard SB 189, K-12 funding, which is the Senate version of funding for the deficiency in the state support appropriation.  The bill is sponsored in the House by Representative Sally Siegrist.  Testifying in favor of the bill were: Melissa Ambre for the DOE; IFT; ISTA; ISBA and IASBO who also testified for IAPSS.  IASBO emphasized the need to have the ceiling for the second year be $50 million and that the State Budget Director “shall” make the distribution to school corporations if this bill passes.  Current law states that the Budget Director “may” make the distribution.  There was no vote on the bill, but it will be brought back next week for any amendments and committee vote.

Senator David Long Retiring From the Senate
Yesterday afternoon Senate President Pro Tem David Long announced that he would be retiring from the Senate effective on election day this next November.  Senator Long has been the leader of the Senate Republicans for the past 12 years.  Along with  the Speaker of the House, Senator Long’s position was the most powerful In the General Assembly.  Senator Long was a great listener regarding K-12 issues, and his leadership in the General Assembly will be missed.  IASBO wishes Senator Long well as he completes his legislative duties and in his future endeavors.
