SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE BRIAN BOSMA STEPS DOWN

This afternoon during the General Assembly’s Organizational Day, Speaker of the House Brian Bosma announced that he was not running for election next year and that the 2020 session would be his last.  Speaker Bosma has been a member of the House of Representatives since 1988.  He was first named Speaker of the House for the 2004-06 session and again beginning in 2010 to the present.  He is the longest serving House Speaker.  The House Republican caucus will elect a member to be the Speaker-Elect who will work with Speaker Bosma during the next session.  The Speaker-Elect will then be elected to be the Speaker beginning at the end of 2020 short session.  Speaker Bosma will become the national chairman of the Republican Legislative Campaign Committee when he ends his service to the State of Indiana.

On a personal note, I have known the Speaker since 1985 when he was a legislative assistant to State Superintendent of Public Instruction H. Dean Evans.  Over his term as a state representative and Speaker of the House, he has always been open with me even when we disagreed.  I wish him well in his future endeavors.
