This workshop is designed for the new school business official.  You will hear from each of the four IASBO research committees:  Operations, Accounting & Budgeting, Human Resources, and School Finance (lunch included in registration price) AGENDA
2.  Non-SBOA  Audits:  $150 / member or $200 / non-member 5/8/24 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
- There are many audits in the world of public education and they are all important to a district's overall fiscal compliance.  We all focus on the biannual State Board of Accounts audit, but what about the other audits that take place in a school district?  This workshop will cover the other audits districts face when entities such as the Internal Revenue Service, Department of Labor, Indiana Public Retirement System, and the Department of Education knock on your district's door.  Learn best practices, risk assessment procedures, compliance tests, necessary follow-up steps after the audit, and more from experts who have had first-hand experience in these audits. 3.  Navigating Employment Leave Issues:  $150 / member or $200 / non-member 5/08/24  1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

This will be an in-depth, practical workshop presented by experienced administrators, HR professionals and counsel walking administrators through the wide variety of leave challenges facing school corporations.  This includes analyzing Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) issues, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) leave accommodation requests, workers compensation issues, and managing leaves under other sources (state law, collective bargaining agreements, etc.) (lunch included in registration price)  AGENDA
4.  Super Session with SBOA and IDOE:   FREE / member and non-member  5/8/24  1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Collective Bargaining Strategy & Law (HR114)

The course will review Indiana law associated with collective bargaining, the role of IEERB and its rules and procedures, collaborative bargaining, mediation, fact-finding, strike plans, bargaining strategy, grievance procedures, and current issues.  In addition, the goal of the course will be to review Indiana law and court cases regarding bargaining and/or meet-and-confer agreements related to classified staff.  Participants will learn which employees are covered by rights under the law, and the appropriate employment and dismissal procedures.  The course will demonstrate how to appropriately structure employee handbooks, job descriptions and letters of employment.  Fair Labor Standards and unemployment rules and regulations will be studied. 
Also included will be a panel discussion with school business officials covering the information they gather prior to negotiations and the process used by their respective schools during negotiations.

Accrual Accounting (A114)

The course will compare cash and accrual accounting and explore strengths and weaknesses in each method.  Attendees will learn to read, understand, and explain the difference between Income Statements and Balance Statements prepared under the accrual-basis vs. the same types of reports prepared under the cash-basis accounting.  Discover why the terms Owner's Equity, Retained Earnings, Profit, Prepaid Expenses, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Capital, Net Fixed Assets and the relationship between Assets, Liabilities and Owner's Equity are important to the businesses who use accrual accounting.  Learn how revenue and expenditures are recorded in accrual-based accounting vs cash-basis accounting and the importance of recognizing the value of fixed assets and real property.  This course will help participants to be able to communicate with various organizations such as the community, the school board, and Chamber of Commerce.
